An unpleasant exchange

Our identity is strongly tied to how we look, I can’t imagine having to change that based on what others think.

All my life I have been made to feel different because of my hair, but when you think about it. And I mean really think. It’s not only stupid, it’s ridiculous. Hair colour does not dictate who you are, but  rather the way people treat you can alter who you become.

I was walking home from college today when two individualists took the time, unprovoked I might add, to comment about my hair. ‘Ginger-minger’ and ‘carrot bitch’ were my favourite of the slurs, but what most surprised me about the exchange was how unexpected it was.

Not only had there been no exchange between us but the ‘attack’ was totally unprovoked and uncalled for, how was my hair colour affecting them? Was I hurting or offending them with my golden glory? No.

I honestly thought the days of name calling based on hair colour was left behind in the schoolyard but these dealing re-awoke something in me, a deep pain from my past.

I stood for twenty minutes this afternoon, staring at hair dye. And then it hit me. I like being ginger, auburn, red, dark copper, dirty blond, whatever. I like it. I do.

It’s who I am!

Why, again, am I changing myself for other people’s happiness? I’ve always struggled with confidence, I still do. I attribute some of this to my past dealings with ‘ginger hate’.

I get stopped by tourists who want photo’s with me BECAUSE of my hair colour – why would I want to be normal?

Having red hair makes me stand out. And I’m still getting used to it some 21 years on. Honestly, I feel like I’m starting to learn who I am.

So next time you go to make fun of someone’s, stop. Stop and think.

(Keep an eye out for posts about ginger discrimination in the near future.)

Do you like people with red hair?

To anyone reading this, don’t ever let anyone make you feel bad about your appearance. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL. YOU ARE LOVED.

People who choose to put others down are sad and pathetic. And when it comes time to meet our maker, they’ll be the ones that suffer.

This seems crazy to me. Those people sound like trailer trash. I live in Brooklyn, and I love people with red hair. I even dyed my hair a deep copper colour a while back. (I’m blonde now, but i loved being ginger)

I don’t understand why some people have a problem with red hair. I think it’s one of the prettiest hair colours, if not the prettiest! Who would want a boring ol’ shade that most of the population have?!
